The Government has designated for spectrum licensing parts of the 3.4 GHz band to enable the conversion of apparatus licences held by NBN Co.

In December 2020, the Minister made a notice designating parts of the 3.4 GHz Band (3400–3575 MHz) for spectrum licensing. The areas and frequencies covered by the notice encompass apparatus licences held by NBN Co. The notice will enable the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to convert NBN Co's apparatus licences to spectrum licences, facilitating the defragmentation of the 3.4 GHz Band.

Following the defragmentation of spectrum licences in the band, NBN Co has undertaken to relinquish its underutilised spectrum in inner-metropolitan areas. ACMA plans to make this spectrum available to other operators, subject to the development of appropriate interference management criteria and assessment of the utility of the spectrum.
