How is EME regulated?
The Australian Government strictly regulates the use of EME, based on decades of Australian and international scientific research.
In Australia, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the independent authority that provides expert advice on radiation protection.
The ARPANSA Standard is based on decades of Australian and international research into EME. It is set well within safe limits for exposure and includes a wide safety margin to protect the public.
ARPANSA also undertakes research into EME and engagement with international experts to inform its Standard.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) regulates and monitors compliance with ARPANSA’s Standard. Equipment used by carriers, such as Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom, must comply with the Standard to operate in Australia.
