When NRS calls are made to an overseas number or received from overseas, the numbers to use are sometimes different. Calls made to an overseas number also cost more. Premium-rate calls (calls to numbers beginning with 19) will also cost more.

Costs and payment methods

The costs of overseas, premium-rate and reverse-charge calls are not covered by the NRS and need to be paid separately by the NRS user or other party to the call.

Calls to overseas or premium-rate numbers incur the following costs:

  • the standard cost (if any) of accessing the NRS, and
  • the additional cost of dialling either overseas or premium-rate numbers.

The payment options for overseas calls using the NRS include:

  • prepaid phone card, or
  • opening an NRS account or
  • for captioned relay handset users, these charges are included in regular bills issued by phone service providers.

For calls to premium-rate numbers, the calls are invoiced through an NRS account, unless the calls are made on a captioned relay handset.

For reverse-charge calls, the person who receives the call must pay for the call via an NRS account, unless the calls are made on a captioned relay handset.

Charges for calls made on a captioned relay handset are included in regular bills issued by phone service providers.

Calling from overseas

NRS users who are temporarily overseas can make and receive calls to and from persons in Australia using the NRS. An NRS account is not needed.

Prepaid phone cards

Prepaid phone cards offer a range of rates for calls to overseas countries. Cards can be purchased at multiple values at convenience stores, petrol stations, supermarkets and on the internet. The cards come with their own instructions but generally, a local number is dialled and a special PIN number is entered before the overseas number is dialled.

NRS accounts

To make premium-rate and overseas calls without the use of a pre-paid card or to receive reverse-charge calls, an NRS account must be opened. Costs of calls are charged to this account. The NRS does not add any additional costs. See here for rates to calls to overseas which NRS account holders will be charged.
