A vulnerability has been identified in various Foscam webcams and baby monitors which allows an attacker to view the footage from your camera over the internet without a password.

If you are using one of the affected models, you should update its firmware using the information provided by Foscam.

Foscam distributes its products in Australia. Affected models include FI8904W, FI8905E, FI8905W, FI8906W, FI8907W, FI8909W, FI8910E, FI8910W, FI8916W, FI8918W, and FI8919W. Your model number can be found on a sticker on the bottom of your camera.

The vulnerability (bug) can allow anyone to gain access to live video footage from the device over the internet. Normally, access to view the footage from these devices is password protected. The bug allows an attacker to bypass the password protection by simply leaving the username and password fields blank.

To check to see if your camera is affected, you can try to login to your camera’s interface by clicking “OK” in the dialogue box that prompts for a username and password.

Updating the firmware

Firmware updates are specific updates for hardware and, much like software updates, can be used to fix security problems.

The vulnerability can be fixed by installing a firmware update that is available from the manufacturer.

When updating firmware, make sure that you follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly, as incorrectly updating may render your device unusable.

You can update your camera’s firmware by following the steps:

1. Note the model of your camera by looking at the sticker on the bottom of the camera.

2. Note the firmware version currently installed on your camera by logging into the camera's administration panel as an administrator. For instructions on how to log into your camera's administration panel, see the instructions provided with your camera. After logging in, go to Device Management and click Device status. See the figure below.

3. Go to the firmware page on the Foscam website with your internet browser.

4. Download the firmware update for your model and firmware version. Check that the first three numbers of your device's firmware version match the version you are going to download. For example, if your current firmware version is you will want to update to

The downloaded update file will be a zip file containing the firmware update, and also a PDF instruction manual to guide you through the update process. Follow these instructions to update your firmware.
