Virus Shield, a top selling anti-virus app for Android devices has been removed from the Google Play store after it was found to be useless.

The app, which cost $3.99, claimed to offer security protection for Android devices, but has been found to actually do nothing more than present an important looking ‘Virus Shield’ image on the screen which changes from a cross to a tick (suggesting your device is protected).

The app has been downloaded thousands of times, putting Virus Shield at the top of paid app lists for the past week. It also featured many good reviews and recommendations.

Although the fake app is harmless, if you have downloaded it, your device is not protected. You should choose a new security product from a reputable source.
