On 17 September 2013, Microsoft issued an emergency security advisory for a vulnerability identified in Internet Explorer.

The vulnerability is known to have been exploited by cyber criminals. Microsoft’s website states that, “An attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit this vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website.”

You should exercise caution visiting unfamiliar websites, or consider using an alternative browser in the meantime.

Microsoft has offered a "Fix it" download which is a temporary solution suitable for some scenarios only. Check the notes in the Fix it information first to see if it applies to you. (Requirements include that previous security updates are applied and it is only applicable to 32 bit Internet Explorer versions.)

Microsoft will provide a more permanent security update as soon as possible.
