The eSafety Office is taking part in a global pilot with Facebook to prevent intimate images of Australians being shared on online.

2 November 2017

Australians concerned about intimate images of themselves or others being shared on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram can now report specific incidents to the Office of the eSafety Commissioner who will notify Facebook. Facebook will then take action to detect the images using image matching technology and to prevent further sharing.

This world first pilot aims to work with government agencies in Australia, the US, UK and Canada to better protect people online and stop the sharing of intimate images without consent.

The pilot was developed from the Global Working Group established by Facebook to engage governments and businesses around the world to identify solutions to keep people safe online.

If you are concerned that an intimate image of you may have been shared online, you can report it on the Office of eSafety Commissioner’s website.
