The review will update Australia’s classification scheme to reflect the digital environment.
16 December 2019
The Government has released the terms of reference for a review of Australia’s classification regulation to develop a framework that reflects today’s digital environment and community needs.
The review will be led by Mr Neville Stevens AO and will commence in early 2020. All interested stakeholders are encouraged to have their say on the future scheme when the consultation period opens.
Much has changed since the current scheme was established in 1995 with the internet and streaming services changing the way we access and consume content. The review will develop a scheme that reflects modern content and delivery platforms, meeting the needs of industry while providing appropriate information and protections for Australians.
The review forms part of the Government’s response to the ACCC Digital Platforms Inquiry to develop a platform-neutral media regulatory framework, including harmonising classification across delivery formats.
We will release a discussion paper for public comment in early 2020.
