A new report from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) shows the communications sector is continuing to rapidly change, with Australians using a growing range of services.

The ACMA's Communications Report 2014–15 is a valuable resource for understanding industry developments and consumer behaviours in the communications sector.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • the demand for data continues to grow, with the total volume of data downloads in Australia for 2014–15 increasing by 425,310 terabytes
  • Australians are using their smartphones to access increasing amounts of content, with the volume of data downloaded over mobile broadband increasing by 85 per cent in 2014–15
  • fixed-line broadband continues to do the heavy lifting, accounting for 92 per cent of the growth in data downloads
  • Australians have embraced over-the-top-streaming services, with rapid take-up of streaming services such as Netflix, Stan and Presto TV
  • Australians are watching more video online, with 34 per cent of Australian adults streaming professionally produced video content or television online per week.
