The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released the Internet Activity, Australia, December 2015 (cat no 8153.0).

This release presents key indicators on the use of the internet by business, government, and households, as collected from the Internet Activity Survey conducted in respect of the three months ended 31 December 2015.  

Fast facts include (year-on-year represents December 2015 compared to December 2014):

  • Much like the end of the June 2015 quarter, total internet subscriber numbers saw a 2% year-on-year increase, reaching 12.9 million.
  • For the first time since 2009, DSL subscriber numbers decreased year-on-year for the December quarter.
  • The number of fibre-to-the-premises subscriptions grew by 99 per cent from December 2014.
  • The total volume of data downloaded via mobile handsets increased 72 per cent year-on-year to 90,693 TB.
  • Australians continue to consume more and more data, with the total volume of data downloaded for the December quarter being 1.7 million TB. Fixed line downloads increased 50 per cent while Wireless increased 22 per cent.
